El Niño Update: World Met Organization Reveals What to Expect as Event Could Extend Into 2027

Kenyans have been urged to pay close attention to official weather updates as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that the ongoing El Niño event is expected to strengthen further and continue affecting global weather patterns into 2027.

In its latest update, the international weather agency said El Niño is firmly established and could become one of the strongest events recorded in recent decades. Forecasts indicate that the phenomenon is likely to persist through February 2027, with its impacts expected to continue beyond this year.

The development comes as Kenya prepares for the October-December short rains season, with meteorologists maintaining that several parts of the country could receive above-average rainfall.

However, experts have cautioned against assuming that a powerful El Niño automatically means extreme rainfall everywhere. Its effects differ from one region to another and depend on other climate conditions, including the Indian Ocean Dipole.

In Kenya, the expected rainfall has raised concerns about possible flooding, damage to infrastructure, disruption of transport and losses affecting farmers and livestock keepers. Heavy rains could also put pressure on communities living in flood-prone areas.

At the same time, weather patterns associated with El Niño can contribute to drought in some parts of the world, demonstrating why authorities must rely on regional forecasts rather than general predictions.

The WMO has indicated that sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific are expected to rise significantly towards the end of 2026, potentially intensifying the event.

Kenyans are therefore encouraged to follow updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and observe any safety advisories issued for their respective counties.

Farmers, businesses and county authorities are also being encouraged to prepare for changing weather conditions by taking appropriate measures to protect lives, property and livelihoods.

Although the forecast points to a potentially powerful El Niño, the actual impact on individual areas will depend on local conditions and subsequent weather updates.

The coming months will be crucial as meteorologists continue monitoring the phenomenon and refining forecasts for 2027.
