Uproar Online After Karen Nyamu Admits to Forging Academic Papers for Her Campaigner
Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has sparked a public outcry after openly admitting to forging a Form 4 certificate to help one of her political supporters join the Kenya Police Force.
In a revelation published by Kenyans.co.ke, the lawmaker confessed that she doctored academic papers to help her campaigner secure admission to the Kiganjo Police Training Main Campus. The scheme backfired during vetting, resulting in the supporter being busted and arrested alongside 17 other recruits.
The confession has triggered fury on social media, with netizens demanding that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) take legal action. Kenyans expressed frustration at the lawmaker’s public admission, questioning why she remains free.
Reacting to the story, one Facebook user questioned why she had not been arrested, while another tagged the DCI, asking it to apprehend her. Another netizen questioned whether the EACC needed more evidence than a public confession to take action.
Many online commentators highlighted what they described as double standards in Kenya’s justice system, pointing out that ordinary citizens face penalties for academic forgery while elites get off scot-free. The saga unfolded on the same day the EACC secured a court fine against a former government accountant caught with a fake academic certificate.
A frustrated citizen lamented that the DCI only seemed to target poor citizens and local leaders. Another commentator pointed out the irony of a lawmaker breaking the same law she is meant to uphold, while others warned the senator that her own words could be used against her in court.
The confession has also renewed scrutiny of Nyamu’s professional credentials as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with some questioning how a qualified lawyer could make such a reckless admission. One user questioned whether the senator had attended law school, saying the confession confirmed what citizens had suspected. Another netizen questioned her state of mind, asking whether she was fine or trying to show Kenyans that she was untouchable.
While a few users mockingly praised her for showing loyalty to her political foot soldiers, the overall public reaction remained hostile.
