Kenyan Man Reveals How a Chance Meeting with a Police Officer Landed Him a Job at Dubai’s Burj Al Ar

A Kenyan man has shared how a chance meeting with a police officer opened the door to an unexpected job opportunity at Dubai’s famous Burj Al Arab hotel. His experience gave him a taste of luxury and success, but his stay at the prestigious hotel ended sooner than he had hoped.

Daniel Kathex, a Kenyan living in the United Arab Emirates, has been sharing his experiences online. His story shows how a simple act of kindness can change someone’s life, even when the opportunity does not last forever.

Kathex’s journey began when he met a CID officer at a restaurant known as Table 7. The two later met again over a meal, and their friendship gradually grew. At the time, Kathex had recently left his job at Real Madrid Cafe, where he had worked for two months, and was searching for another opportunity.

His biggest challenge was his immigration status. Without the required documents, securing formal employment was difficult, and the medical examinations required for some jobs presented another obstacle. However, the officer believed that Kathex’s character and conduct could help him find a way forward.

The officer decided to help by connecting him with a Kenyan manager who operated a cleaning company supplying workers to hotels. He recommended Kathex for a steward’s position without asking for any payment in return. That recommendation eventually gave the young man an opportunity to work at one of Dubai’s most recognised luxury hotels.

Kathex joined the Burj Al Arab as a steward, but his experience and personal qualities soon attracted attention. During his first week of training, his height, good command of English and friendly manner impressed those around him. He was then given an additional week of training to work as a bellboy.

The new position introduced him to a different world. Kathex recalled earning tips in a single day that were reportedly higher than the salary he had received at his previous workplace. Some wealthy guests gave him $100 for simple services, such as opening their car doors, while European visitors sometimes asked to take photographs with him in his blue uniform.

For a man who had been struggling to find stable work, the experience was exciting. Working at the luxurious hotel allowed him to interact with wealthy travellers and enjoy an environment far removed from the difficulties he had faced before securing the job.

However, his promising journey came to an end after about one month. Kathex was called to the human resources office, where the manager acknowledged his good conduct and the positive impression he had made on guests. Despite his performance, the hotel could not continue employing him because his immigration documents were not in order.

The manager explained the legal risks involved and informed him that he should not report to work the following day. Although losing the job was disappointing, Kathex received a gesture that made the experience less painful. The HR manager reportedly gave him two months’ salary in cash and encouraged him to resolve his documentation problems before searching for another position.

Looking back, Kathex says the experience taught him lessons that went beyond working in a luxurious hotel. He came to appreciate the value of trustworthy connections, the importance of treating people with dignity even when ending their employment, and the difference between being surrounded by wealth and achieving financial stability.

His story is a reminder that opportunities can come from unexpected places, sometimes through people we meet by chance. However, it also highlights the importance of having the proper documents when seeking employment abroad, since even good performance may not be enough to overcome legal challenges.

Although Kathex’s time at the Burj Al Arab was brief, the experience left him with valuable memories and a new understanding of kindness, opportunity and the realities of working in a foreign country.
