Njiru Predicts Opposition Fallout as Kalonzo, Gachagua and Sifuna Face Fresh Political Test Ahead

Wiper Party spokesperson and city lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has warned that Kenya’s United Opposition could split into competing political camps ahead of the 2027 General Election, raising fresh questions about the coalition’s ability to challenge President William Ruto.

Njiru shared his assessment on Thursday, October 22, following a political rally in Nakuru attended by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, former presidential candidate Martha Karua and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.

The gathering attracted attention because several prominent opposition figures were absent, prompting renewed debate about unity within the broader opposition movement.

In his analysis, Njiru identified three possible political groupings that could reshape the race for State House.

The first camp, he suggested, could unite Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

The second grouping could revolve around President Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Njiru also predicted a possible third alliance involving Karua, Matiang’i and Nyoro, potentially introducing another layer of competition among leaders currently associated with the wider opposition camp.

He acknowledged that his projections were not definitive, describing them as his interpretation of the political developments unfolding ahead of the next election.

The latest prediction follows other separate political engagements involving leaders aligned with the broader opposition. Last month, Siaya Governor James Orengo joined Matiang’i and Nyoro at a rally in Narok, although Karua did not attend.

Despite these separate activities, the leaders remain associated with the wider opposition coalition structure.

Gachagua has repeatedly advocated for opposition leaders to agree on one presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in 2027. However, he has also cautioned that disagreements over the flag bearer could prompt an unnamed politician to leave the coalition.

Njiru’s remarks have therefore renewed scrutiny of whether opposition leaders can overcome their differences and maintain a common front before the country heads to the polls.
