“I Really Don’t Know About Matiang’i,”James Gakuya Predicts Who Will Stick Together in Opposition

Embakasi North MP James Gakuya has weighed in on the unity of the United Opposition, predicting which leaders will stay together until the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Wednesday, October 22, 2026, Gakuya said he is confident that Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna, and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua will finish the journey together.

He, however, expressed doubt about former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

“What I want to assure Kenyans is that I know Kalonzo, Sifuna and Gachagua will finish this journey together. As for my brother Matiang’i, I really don’t know,” Gakuya said.

Gakuya, a close ally of Gachagua and a key figure in the DCP, made the remarks amid growing speculation of a split in the opposition.

His comments come just a day after Matiang’i, Martha Karua and Ndindi Nyoro held a joint rally in Nakuru without Kalonzo, Gachagua and Sifuna, sparking talk of separate camps within the coalition.

The Embakasi North MP has in recent weeks been vocal in pushing for a united opposition front to face President William Ruto, while also defending Gachagua’s central role in the opposition formation.

Gachagua on Tuesday hosted Sifuna at his Wamunyoro residence, where the two leaders reportedly discussed a possible working arrangement ahead of 2027, with Kalonzo also seen as a key pillar of that alliance.

Gakuya’s remarks appear to suggest that the Kalonzo-Sifuna-Gachagua axis is more solid, while Matiang’i’s commitment to the United Opposition remains uncertain to some insiders.
