Ruto Hands Over COMESA Chairmanship to Zimbabwe’s Mnangagwa

President William Ruto has concluded his one-year term as chairperson of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) handing over leadership to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The transition, announced on October 22, 2026 marks the end of Ruto’s tenure at the helm of the regional economic bloc which brings together countries seeking to strengthen trade, investment and economic cooperation across Africa.

During his term Ruto was responsible for helping advance COMESA’s agenda including efforts to improve trade among member states and create opportunities for businesses. The organisation works to reduce trade barriers and encourage countries to cooperate in promoting economic growth.

Mnangagwa now takes over the chairmanship assuming responsibility for guiding the bloc’s activities and engaging member states on shared economic priorities. His leadership comes as African countries continue looking for ways to expand regional markets attract investment and improve the movement of goods across borders.

The handover highlights Kenya’s continued involvement in regional affairs and its engagement with other African nations through established institutions. COMESA provides a platform for member states to discuss trade, development and economic cooperation.

For traders and businesses across the region the bloc’s work remains important in improving market access and strengthening economic ties between participating countries.

As Mnangagwa begins his term attention will turn to his priorities and how member states will work together to advance regional integration and promote shared economic progress.
