Sarkodie appointed ambassador of KNUST, gifted VVIP souvenir
Sarkodie has added another honour to his growing list of achievements after being appointed an ambassador for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The award-winning rapper received the recognition during a visit to the Kumasi-based university as part of activities leading up to his Rapperholic concert in the Ashanti Regional capital.
But the appointment was not the only highlight of his visit. KNUST Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christian Agyare, also presented Sarkodie with a special plaque reserved for Very Very Important Persons (VVIPs) who visit the institution.
The souvenir is a distinctive piece of art featuring the university’s entrance designed in the form of a traditional stool. It also captures Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, whose donation of land played a significant role in the establishment of the university.
Explaining the university’s decision to bring the rapper on board as an ambassador, Prof. Agyare said KNUST was looking beyond its record of academic excellence as it sought to establish itself as an institution of greater influence and distinction.
“We are moving from excellence to eminence, and we need people like you on board,” he said.
Sarkodie’s visit also brought him face-to-face with students, giving them an opportunity to interact with one of Ghana’s most celebrated music stars ahead of his highly anticipated concert.
The university’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC), meanwhile, pledged to show up in support of the rapper at Rapperholic, signalling that he could count on a sizeable student following when he takes the stage in Kumasi.
The visit is part of Sarkodie’s itinerary ahead of the Kumasi edition of Rapperholic. He touched down in the city on Monday and received a warm reception as excitement builds around the concert.
