Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe backed to win the Ballon d’Or by former Sevilla star
According to a report by GOAL on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Nzonzi believes Mbappe’s individual performances make him a deserving candidate for football’s most prestigious individual award. However, the Real Madrid star is expected to face strong competition, particularly from Barcelona’s young sensation Lamine Yamal, who is also considered a leading contender.
Real Madrid finished last season without winning a major trophy, while France suffered elimination at the hands of Spain in the World Cup semi-finals. Nevertheless, Mbappe strengthened his individual reputation by claiming the tournament’s Golden Boot, demonstrating his ability to deliver impressive performances even when his teams fall short of their collective ambitions.
Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s encounter with Sevilla, Nzonzi argued that the Ballon d’Or should recognise individual excellence rather than focus exclusively on team achievements. He maintained that Mbappe’s performances have placed him above other players currently competing at the highest level.
“Right now I think he is the best in the world. Although he has lacked the titles, what he has achieved on an individual level is impressive,” Nzonzi said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.
The former Sevilla midfielder further explained that Mbappe’s consistency and personal achievements make him a strong candidate for the award. In his view, the French forward has demonstrated a level of performance that few footballers have managed to match.
“The Ballon d’Or should be for the best player or the one who has performed the most and I think there has not been anyone like Kylian,” he added.
Despite his strong endorsement, Nzonzi was careful not to place Mbappe on the same level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Both football icons enjoyed extraordinary careers, collecting numerous individual honours and major team trophies throughout their time at the top of the game.
“He is on his way, but he is not yet on that step. They are true legends who have won everything individually and collectively and Mbappe still has a long way to go to prove things. Time will tell,” he said.
Mbappe has continued to influence Real Madrid’s performances this season, scoring nine goals across all competitions. However, some missed opportunities have also attracted attention, adding another dimension to discussions about his overall form.
As the Ballon d’Or debate continues, Mbappe’s individual statistics, consistency and ability to deliver in important matches are likely to remain central to his chances of winning the prestigious award.
