Reactions Trail As Peter Obi Orders UK-Based Nigerians To Stop Sending Money Home

According to a report by Vanguard on Monday, October 19, 2026, the presidential candidate of NDC, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians living in the United Kingdom to stop giving money to people at home who request financial assistance.

He said such support might ease hardship temporarily but would not address its root causes.

Obi made the appeal during a town hall meeting with Nigerians in Manchester on Sunday. He blamed Nigeria’s economic difficulties on poor leadership. He urged Nigerians in the diaspora to encourage their relatives and friends at home to vote for leaders who could improve the country.

The former Anambra State governor also defended his record in public office. He claimed that he had saved substantial public funds during his tenure. Although he admitted that he was not perfect, he challenged other governors to show that they had saved at least 10 per cent of the amount he claimed to have saved.

Obi encouraged Nigerians to begin by supporting leaders they considered less corrupt. He argued that this could be a starting point for national change. He added that other countries had made progress through similar efforts.

The NDC presidential candidate also stressed the need for collective responsibility. He said his conversations with Nigerians had reinforced his belief that citizens must play an active role in addressing the country’s challenges.

Obi urged Nigerians to take the 2027 general election seriously. He described it as a crucial moment for the country. He maintained that choosing capable leaders was necessary to tackle the causes of economic hardship.

The report has generated widespread reactions from Nigerians who shared different opinions. Here are some reactions:
