A former Majority Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has dismissed claims that former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong will leave the party after losing the party’s presidential primaries.

According to Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, he has known Kennedy Agyapong for a long time and does not believe he would abandon the party.

He indicated that the party’s leadership will soon begin engagements with Agyapong and his team to discuss future plans on how to recapture power in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben TV on February 23, 2026, he acknowledged that losing an election can be painful but stressed the need for unity.

“It will be painful to lose an election, but we will start to talk with him and discuss issues, I know that regardless of whatever happens, the Ken I know will never leave the NPP, “he said.

Why Kennedy Agyapong is ‘bitter’ – Hohoe MP explains

“Some people, out of bitterness, are behind some of these rumours, but Ken will not leave, “he added.

His comments follow rumours circulating on social media, where a group claiming to belong to “Team Kennedy” alleged that the former presidential hopeful had ditched the NPP to form a new party.

Kennedy Agyapong contested the NPP presidential primaries alongside four other candidates. However, he lost his bid to lead the party into the 2028 elections to Mahamudu Bawumia.

He has since pledged his support to the party and expressed his commitment to working together to secure victory in 2028.

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong campaign team, Kwasi Kwarteng, has rejected any rumours that the absence of Kennedy Agyapong at the party’s thanksgiving service has to do with plans to establish a separate party.

Speaking on Prime Morning on JoyPrime on Monday, February 16, 2026, Kwasi Kwarteng cleared the air by urging that both he and the former MP had been out of town at the time of the thanksgiving service.

“I was also out of town, like Ken. Ken himself was out of town. But I am here speaking for the party, and I think that should be enough,” he said.

Kwarteng insisted that there is no basis for claims that Agyapong intends to form a new political party.

He stated that reading political motives into attendance at a single event was both unfair and illogical, noting that several prominent party stalwarts were also absent.

Among those he listed as being absent too were ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo and former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

“President Akufo-Addo was not there. Is he also going to start his own party? President Kufuor was not there. Is he also going to start his own party?” Kwarteng asked.

Kwasi also referenced lawyer and former minister Samuel Atta Akyea, widely known for his instrumental role in the campaign of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Kwarteng suggested that even if Atta Akyea had not attended, it would not warrant questions about his loyalty.

“Assuming, without admitting, that he was not there, does that also mean his loyalty to the party is in doubt?” he asked.
