 Bessa Simons

President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons, has dismissed allegations suggesting that the union donated an amount of GH¢500 to the family of the late gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, as a token to assist with funeral expenses.

Speaking in an interview on Starr FM, Bessa Simons vehemently dismissed the allegation, stating that the union joined the family for the one-week observance and supported them with GH¢500 for the observance, stressing that the union will make its official donation on the final funeral day.

“I do not term it as GH¢500 from MUSIGA, it was made to wait for the final funeral rite. Usually, the union do not donate on the one-week, but just to show some level of solidarity, we donated that money to support the family for the one-week, and the union secretary made it clear to the people that it is not the official donation,” he explained.

It would be recalled that MUSIGA recently made a cash donation of GH¢500 to the family of the late gospel musician Yaw Sarpong.

This donation was made by the leadership of the union during the one-week observance ceremony organised in honour of the late musician on February 19 at Asuofua Asumenya Park, Kumasi.

Following the donation, many on social media have lamented over the amount made by the union, referring to it as “unacceptable”. Content Creator Efua Ampofo, on her X page, has this to say, “Shatta Wale has been fighting for change in the Ghana music industry. You may not like his delivery, but when a whole legend like Yaw Sarpong receives just GH¢500 as funeral support, you begin to understand his frustration.”

The family of the late Yaw Sarpong has officially announced that his burial ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
