JOHANNESBURG – The Agricultural Business Chamber of SA says the latest news on AGOA is good news for local exporters.

The US Senate has voted to extend the African Growth and Opportunity Act for another two years.

AGOA is a US law that provided eligible sub-Saharan African countries with duty-free access to the US market.

There has been concern that even if AGOA was renewed, US lawmakers would remove South Africa as an eligible nation.

In recent years, the Trump administration has imposed new tariffs, some of which were struck down.

If AGOA were to be removed, there would be an additional tariff in play, over and above the new 12.5 percent tariff imposed by Washington.
