The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson Dafeamekpor, has pledged to donate three months of his salary to support the growth of the Ghana Sports Fund, following the first corporate donation made earlier this month.

The Ghana Sports Fund, passed into law earlier this year, serves as the dedicated source of funding for the development of sports in Ghana. The multi-source fund is designed to support athlete welfare, infrastructure development, grassroots sports, and systematic talent identification across the country.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga announced the pledge in Parliament on Thursday, delivering the message on behalf of Dafeamekpor.

“The Chief Whip has asked me to announce that he is committing three months of his salary to the Ghana Sports Fund,” Ayariga stated.

In a light-hearted moment following the serious announcement, Ayariga joked about his colleague’s generosity.

“I will invite the special prosecutor to come and find out how he’s going to survive for the three months,” he quipped, drawing laughter in the chamber.

Dafeamekpor’s commitment follows the National Investment Bank’s first corporate donation to the fund earlier this month, demonstrating growing institutional and individual support for the initiative.

The bill’s passage marks a significant policy move aimed at addressing longstanding funding challenges in the sports sector. Government officials hope the fund will provide a more structured and reliable source of support for Ghanaian sports, from the grassroots level to national teams competing on the international stage.
