Paul Scholes Reveals Two Manchester United Players Will Stop The Club From Winning The EPL Title

According to a report by Metro on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes the club will never win the Premier League title unless they replace centre-backs Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.

Manchester United’s disappointing start to the season continued on Saturday when Michael Carrick’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur, who had been reduced to ten men during the match. The result has increased concerns about United’s ability to compete with the strongest teams in the league, with questions now being raised about the quality of their defence.

Scholes has made it clear that he does not believe Maguire and Martinez can form a defence capable of helping Manchester United return to the top of English football, insisting that the club needs to make major changes at the back.

Speaking about the defenders, Scholes said: “We’ve had the same centre-halves now for two or three years and we know you’re not going to be successful with them. You’re never, ever going to win the Premier League with them. The goal on Saturday was a prime example – we know Lisandro Martinez is a good footballer but for your centre-half to be bullied like that… you cannot let that happen, it’s criminal. Manchester United need a new back-four, they need a new back-four.”

The former England international believes United have allowed the same defensive problems to continue for too long, and he feels that bringing in new players across the back four is necessary if the club wants to challenge for major trophies again.

Although Martinez is known for his passing ability and confidence on the ball, Scholes feels that his performance in the draw against Tottenham exposed weaknesses that opponents can take advantage of. Maguire has also faced criticism over the years, leaving the club with serious decisions to make about its defensive options.
