Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for Tupac Shakur’s murder

According to a report by ABC News on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Duane ā€œKeffe Dā€ Davis, the only person ever charged in connection with the 1996 murder of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

Davis, 63, received the sentence on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at a court in Las Vegas, Nevada, nearly three decades after Shakur was fatally shot in a drive-by attack near the Las Vegas Strip.

The sentence followed Davis’ conviction in August for first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. Prosecutors accused him of orchestrating the attack, although he was not identified as the person who fired the fatal shots.

During the sentencing hearing, members of Shakur’s family delivered emotional statements about the lasting impact of the rapper’s death on their lives and the wider family.

Sekyiwa Shakur, the late musician’s sister, told the court that Davis deserved the maximum punishment for his role in the killing.

She said the loss extended beyond her personal grief, describing the death as a tragedy that affected generations of the family.

Presiding judge Carli Kierny also addressed Davis during the hearing, making it clear that the passage of time did not remove his responsibility for the crime.

The judge said Davis would have to face justice for his role in taking another person’s life.

Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling in a BMW driven by Death Row Records founder Marion ā€œSugeā€ Knight in Las Vegas.

The shooting occurred hours after a confrontation at the MGM Grand casino following a boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon.

According to prosecutors, the confrontation involved Shakur’s entourage and Orlando Anderson, Davis’ nephew, who was associated with a rival gang.

Investigators said the dispute prompted a retaliatory attack later that night. A white Cadillac pulled alongside Shakur’s vehicle at a traffic light, and occupants of the car opened fire.

Shakur, who was 25 at the time, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died six days later, on September 13, 1996.

The killing became one of the most widely discussed unsolved cases in hip-hop history, attracting decades of speculation about the people involved and the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Davis, a former leader associated with the South Side Compton Crips street gang in California, was arrested in September 2023 and charged in connection with Shakur’s murder.

Before his arrest, he had spoken publicly about the shooting in interviews and described his alleged involvement in a 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend.

Prosecutors relied heavily on those statements during the trial, arguing that Davis had played a leading role in arranging the attack and had provided details that investigators were able to corroborate.

They also argued that the shooting was motivated by retaliation following the earlier confrontation involving Anderson.

Davis’ defence team, however, challenged the reliability of his previous accounts, arguing that he had exaggerated or fabricated parts of his story. His lawyers also questioned whether prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence to establish his role in the killing.

Davis pleaded not guilty and maintained his innocence during the proceedings.

The jury ultimately rejected the defence arguments and found him guilty after deliberating for less than three hours in August.

Following the verdict, Davis indicated that he intended to appeal his conviction.

The case had remained unresolved for years, partly because investigators struggled to secure evidence that could support a prosecution. Davis’ public statements later helped revive the investigation and became central to the case brought against him.

Although prosecutors maintained that Davis orchestrated the attack, the identity of the person who fired the fatal shots was not established through his conviction.

The other men alleged to have been involved in the shooting have since died, leaving Davis as the sole defendant prosecuted in the case.

His sentencing marks a major legal development in the investigation into Shakur’s death, which continued to attract international attention long after the rapper became one of the defining figures in 1990s hip-hop.

Shakur remains influential through his music, poetry and cultural legacy, with songs addressing poverty, violence, racism and life in disadvantaged communities continuing to reach new audiences.
