Strait of Hormuz on Edge as Fresh Tanker Strike Fuels Fears of Wider Crisis Amid Stalled Peace Talks
According to a report by Al Jazeera on Tuesday October 13, 2026, a tanker has been struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), as attacks on shipping in the region continue amid stalled efforts to end the US-Israeli war on Iran.
In a statement, UKMTO confirmed the incident but provided few details about the vessel, the extent of the damage or whether anyone was injured. The agency said the circumstances surrounding the strike were under investigation.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over maritime security in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping corridor connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea.
UKMTO’s latest incident reports, published on October 12, recorded three additional vessels struck by unidentified projectiles while travelling through the strait. The incidents involved a crude oil tanker, a products tanker and a container ship. Authorities were investigating, and the condition of the container ship’s crew and the extent of the damage remained unknown in the initial report.
The renewed attacks come amid a sharp rise in maritime incidents as diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict remain stalled. At least 12 ships were attacked during the week ending October 5, the highest weekly total since the war began, according to reporting by Reuters.
The threat has also spread beyond the strait itself. A tanker was attacked off Qatar’s northern coast, highlighting the growing risks to vessels operating elsewhere in the Gulf.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for global energy supplies, making continued attacks a concern for shipping operators and oil markets. Disruptions have already affected the movement of crude oil through the passage, while shipowners face mounting security risks.
UKMTO has urged vessels to transit with caution and report suspicious activity as investigations continue. The latest incidents underscore the deteriorating security situation around one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.
