Latest Opinion Poll Shows the Popularity of the Kikuyu Parliamentary Candidates
The Kikuyu parliamentary race is taking shape ahead of the next General Election, which is scheduled for August next year, with incumbent MP Kimani Ichung’wah facing competition from his 2022 close competitor Stephen Kigathi.
According to the latest survey by Swiss Poll International, released on Monday, October 12, 2026, Kigathi is leading the race with 44.9% support, while Ichung’wah follows with 23.1%. Owen Ndungu occupies third position with 17.6%, as the battle for the Kikuyu parliamentary seat gathers momentum.
The survey shows that Kigathi received 1,601 votes against Ichung’wah’s 791 votes, giving him a lead of 21.8 percentage points over the incumbent. Ndungu garnered 628 votes, while Samuel Kuria received 4.0% support, equivalent to 142 votes. Wakili Muchanga Kiragu follows with 3.6%, representing 130 votes, while 6.8% of respondents, equivalent to 271 votes, remain undecided.
The poll had a sample size of 3,563 respondents, a margin of error of plus or minus 3% and a confidence level of 95%.
Ichung’wah is defending the seat on the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, while Kigathi is expected to run on the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket because of his current political alignment with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Ichung’wah is influential in Kikuyu since he is currently serving his third term as the MP of the constituency. Gachagua, on the other hand, has gained considerable political influence in the Mt Kenya region following his impeachment as deputy president.
Gachagua has on several occasions urged Kikuyu residents to vote out Ichung’wah in the 2027 General Election because of his association with Ruto. The former deputy president has criticized the MP’s political alignment with President William Ruto who he accuses of intimidating the people of Mt Kenya.
Ichung’wah, however, has maintained that he cannot join DCP, arguing that it is a small party. His position highlights the political differences between him and Gachagua as both camps prepare for the next General Election.
