“Do Not Mistake My Respect for Fear”: Female Leader Sends Strong Message
A prominent Kenyan female politician has addressed speculation about her relationship with a powerful political ally, following remarks that sparked discussion about possible tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Suba South MP Millie Odhiambo recently spoke about her relationship with Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, describing the governor as a younger sister while making it clear that mutual respect should not be mistaken for weakness.
Her remarks come amid growing political discussions within ODM as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Odhiambo publicly warned that she would respond if she felt undermined or attacked politically. She maintained that although she respects Wanga as a fellow leader and the chairperson of ODM, that respect should not be interpreted as fear.
The MP also alleged that people had been sent to interfere with her activities in her constituency. Those allegations have contributed to speculation about the state of the relationship between the two leaders.
However, the claims should be understood as Odhiambo’s allegations rather than established facts.
The exchange has attracted attention because both women hold influential positions within ODM, a party that continues to navigate its future following the death of longtime leader Raila Odinga.
Wanga serves as Homa Bay governor and ODM national chairperson, while Odhiambo represents Suba South Constituency in Parliament.
Their public remarks have raised questions about internal relationships within the party, particularly as political discussions ahead of the next election gather momentum.
Odhiambo has also indicated that her political ambitions extend beyond the Homa Bay gubernatorial contest, saying she is interested in pursuing the presidency in 2032.
It remains unclear whether the disagreement will develop into a broader political confrontation or whether the two leaders will resolve their differences.
For now, the exchange highlights how personal relationships, constituency interests and political ambitions can intersect within party politics.
Whether the two leaders can maintain a working relationship may become clearer through their future public engagements and political decisions.
