Chelsea are asking for trouble if they sign Liverpool flop next year

According to a report by Chelsea Chronicle on Sunday, 11 October 2026, Chelsea have been warned against pursuing Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz ahead of the 2027 transfer window, with doubts raised over whether he can adapt to the Premier League and improve Xabi Alonso’s squad.

The Blues are expected to strengthen several positions next year, with Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott reportedly among their targets.

Chelsea have experienced difficulties in midfield this season, despite showing improvements in recent performances.

However, their potential interest in Wirtz has raised questions about whether he would be the right addition.

Wirtz joined Liverpool with a strong reputation following his impressive performances at Bayer Leverkusen under Alonso.

However, his struggles at Anfield have fuelled speculation that he could consider a move elsewhere.

Chelsea’s connection with Alonso, who previously coached Wirtz in Germany, could make Stamford Bridge an attractive destination.

Nevertheless, the report argues that the German international’s difficulties in England should discourage the club from pursuing a deal.

The Blues have previously signed Bundesliga talents who struggled to reproduce their best performances consistently in the Premier League.

Timo Werner and Kai Havertz experienced difficulties after moving from Germany, although Havertz later established himself at Arsenal.

Jadon Sancho also struggled to meet expectations following his move from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United and his subsequent spell at Chelsea.

Another concern is whether Wirtz would have a regular starting place in Alonso’s current system.

Chelsea have enjoyed positive performances from Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, who operate as the two attacking midfielders in Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

Rogers scored his fourth Premier League goal since joining Chelsea during Saturday’s match against Bournemouth, while Palmer provided an assist.

Their performances have strengthened the argument that Chelsea already possess suitable options in the attacking midfield positions.

Although Wirtz remains a talented player, signing him could create unnecessary competition in an area where Chelsea already have established starters.

Chelsea must carefully assess their transfer priorities before committing significant funds to another attacking midfielder.
