Governor Makinde Explains Why He Regret Supporting Tinubu in 2023 Presidential Election

According to report by Vanguard on Sunday, October 11, 2026, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed regret over his decision to support President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, saying their political alliance failed to produce national unity, fairness and competent governance.

Makinde disclosed this during a live radio interview in Ibadan on Sunday, while explaining why he and other aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors backed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, instead of their party’s flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar.

The governor said his support was motivated by the expectation that Tinubu would establish a government of national unity and competence, bringing together capable Nigerians from different regions to address the country’s challenges.

He explained that the decision followed disagreements within the PDP over its leadership structure and presidential ticket.

According to him, the governors believed that after eight years of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, power should shift to the South in the interest of fairness and equity.

Makinde said he initially supported the presidential ambition of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, but became dissatisfied when the PDP nominated Atiku while Iyorchia Ayu remained the party’s national chairman.

He disclosed that the group asked Atiku during a meeting in London to allow Ayu’s replacement with Taofeek Arapaja, then Deputy National Chairman (South), to address their concerns about regional balance.

However, the disagreement persisted, leading them to support Tinubu.

Makinde said he repeatedly emphasised during the campaign that Nigeria needed an inclusive administration focused on competence and national renewal.

However, he argued that the current government had failed to meet those expectations.

He also recalled recommending an Oyo indigene for the position of Minister of Budget and Economic Planning after Tinubu requested a nominee. However, Adebayo Adelabu was eventually appointed Minister of Power.

The governor further disclosed that he rejected Tinubu’s request to help organise the APC in Oyo State, insisting on his loyalty to the PDP.

Makinde declared his presidential ambition in May 2026 under an alliance involving the PDP and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

He has also advocated a strong opposition to prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state.

Admitting that his support for Tinubu was a mistake, Makinde said responsible leadership required acknowledging errors and apologising when necessary.
