Michael Carrick Warned Man United Are Doomed Unless He Makes Change

Michael Carrick has been warned that Manchester United risk suffering heavy defeats against stronger opponents unless he makes changes to his midfield after their 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a report by Metro on Sunday, October 11, 2026, former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy believes United are too easy to play against because of the gaps between their midfield and defence.

United took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the 73rd minute at Old Trafford on Saturday, but Dominic Solanke scored a stoppage-time equaliser to deny Carrick’s side all three points.

Tottenham had Rodrigo Bentancur sent off in the 78th minute, yet United struggled to control the game and were fortunate to secure a point after the visitors missed several chances.

Murphy believes the partnership between Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo is not providing enough protection, although he insists the problem also involves the team’s overall tactical organisation.

He said United lacked energy and control in midfield, with the central players failing to stay close enough to their defenders. Murphy also argued that the wide players should move inside to help when the team comes under pressure.

The former England international added that United appeared more organised and difficult to beat towards the end of last season, suggesting they have regressed in the current campaign.

Murphy warned that the space United leave between their lines could prove costly against better opposition, particularly teams capable of exploiting gaps with quick attacking movements.

He suggested Carrick may need to strengthen the midfield by introducing another central player, potentially sacrificing a forward to create a more balanced formation.

United previously looked more solid with Casemiro alongside Mainoo, while summer signing Carlos Baleba could now be considered for a starting role after coming off the bench against Tottenham.

Carrick is under increasing pressure after United won just one of their opening six Premier League matches, collecting six points.

The manager admitted he was disappointed with the result and the team’s points tally, acknowledging that improvements were needed quickly.
