Tension on Stage as Koffi Olomide and Fred Machoka Appear to Clash at Machoka at 50

What was meant to be a smooth night of rumba and celebration took a curious turn at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi on Saturday, when Congolese star Koffi Olomide and veteran broadcaster Fred Obachi Machoka appeared to disagree on stage.

The concert, titled Machoka at 50, marked five decades of Machoka’s career on radio and television. Fans filled the venue to honour the man affectionately known as Uncle Fred, who hosts the popular rhumba show Roga Roga on Radio Citizen and Citizen TV.

The line-up was packed with African music royalty, with Olomide as the headliner alongside Mbilia Bel and Sam Fan Thomas, plus local bands.

Midway through the programme, the two men shared the stage in what looked like a moment of tribute. Instead, the exchange between them appeared to grow tense.

Their body language and the pauses between words suggested a difference of opinion, though the crowd could not tell what it was about.

Some guests looked puzzled, while others laughed it off as the playful banter that often comes with old friends in the entertainment world.

Machoka, a seasoned communicator who has handled live microphones for fifty years, kept his composure and steered the programme forward. Olomide, famous for his bold stage presence, soon returned to what the crowd came for. The mood lifted as the music took over and the audience danced late into the night.

Whatever the cause of the moment, it did little to spoil a historic evening. The celebration recognised a man who spent a lifetime promoting African music and culture on Kenyan airwaves, and who brought some of the continent’s biggest names to honour that journey.
