Gary Neville names two Man Utd stars who must not play together after Spurs draw

According to a report by Metro on Saturday, October 10, 2026, former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has questioned the effectiveness of the midfield partnership between Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo following the club’s reported 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

Neville believes the two midfielders lack the energy and dynamism needed to control Premier League matches and has urged manager Michael Carrick to reconsider the combination after another disappointing result.

Manchester United took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the second half, but Dominic Solanke scored a late equaliser to deny the hosts victory. United also failed to protect their advantage despite Tottenham being reduced to ten men following Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal.

Neville expressed particular concern about United’s performance in midfield, where Tottenham’s Sandro Tonali, Lucas Bergvall and Conor Gallagher reportedly proved more effective in the physical contest. Tielemans struggled to match their intensity and was substituted before the hour mark.

Speaking on his podcast, Neville said the partnership had given him sufficient reasons to question whether it was suitable for Manchester United.

“I’m not calling time on it because that’s probably too drastic but I’ve seen enough to think that’s not a midfield that’s dynamic enough to play at this football club in the Premier League,” Neville said.

The former defender, however, distinguished between the players’ individual qualities and their ability to function effectively together. He acknowledged that both midfielders were good players but suggested their strengths might not complement each other well enough to form a successful partnership.

Carlos Baleba’s introduction reportedly brought additional energy to United’s midfield alongside Mainoo. His performance could provide Carrick with another option as he looks to improve the team’s balance and competitiveness in the centre of the pitch.

Neville also warned that United must improve quickly as they prepare for a demanding run of fixtures. He stressed the need for the team to become stronger both mentally and physically to avoid further disappointing results.

Carrick now faces the challenge of finding a midfield combination capable of offering greater mobility, defensive protection and control. Although Tielemans and Mainoo have featured regularly together this season, the draw against Tottenham has raised fresh questions about whether they should remain United’s first-choice midfield partnership.
