How Raila Managed To Escape 11 Bullets Sprayed Inside His Vehicle During 2023 Protests, Details
A bodyguard who protected the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has recounted a terrifying incident in which police allegedly fired 11 bullets at the opposition leader’s vehicle during the 2023 anti-government protests.
Maurice Ogeta, who served as Raila’s bodyguard, narrated the ordeal in an account published by The Sunday Standard on Sunday, October 11, 2026, describing how he and other security officers feared for their lives as gunfire targeted the vehicle carrying their boss.
According to Ogeta, the incident occurred about a year before Raila was accorded a state funeral following his death. He recalled that the officers accompanying the opposition leader found themselves in a dangerous situation as police allegedly unleashed a hail of bullets at the vehicle.
The bodyguard said the shooting became so intense that members of Raila’s security team had to use their bodies as human shields to protect him.
Ogeta recalled hearing one of the officers in charge of security, who was positioned in the front vehicle, communicate through a walkie-talkie that they had been killed.
The chilling message heightened the fear among the guards, who were already struggling to survive the shooting.
“It got to a point when the shots were too much and I heard one of our officers who was in charge of security and was in the front car say through the walkie-talkie that they have killed mzee,” Ogeta recounted.
He further described the moment as one in which he believed death could reach him at any time.
“I was waiting for my turn to die,” he said.
The account sheds light on the security risks Raila and his allies faced during the demonstrations against the government in 2023.
The allegations also revive questions about the use of force by police during opposition-led protests. However, the claims surrounding the shooting require independent verification to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
