Kisumu Woman Begins 72-Hour Pillar-Hugging Challenge in Memory of Raila Odinga
A 22-year-old woman from Kisumu has embarked on a 72-hour pillar-hugging challenge to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga ahead of the first anniversary of his death.
Lavender Wesonga began the unusual tribute at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex on Friday, October 9, at 3:20 p.m. She plans to continue hugging the pillar until Monday, October 12, at the same time, completing the three-day challenge.
Wesonga said her decision was inspired by the affection she had for Raila, whom many of his supporters fondly called Baba. His death in October 2025 was a painful moment for her, prompting her to find a personal way of remembering the veteran politician.
As part of the tribute, she painted the pillar white to symbolise peace. Through the gesture, she hopes to encourage Kenyans to embrace unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, especially as the country approaches another election period.
The challenge comes days before the country marks the first anniversary of Raila’s death on October 15, 2026. The former Prime Minister died in India on October 15, 2025, aged 80, while receiving medical treatment.
Raila remained a prominent figure in Kenya’s politics for decades, participating in major political contests and advocating for democratic reforms. His influence on the country’s political landscape earned him a loyal following across different regions.
Wesonga’s three-day challenge offers a personal way of keeping his memory alive, with the white-painted pillar serving as a symbol of the peace she hopes Kenyans will continue to uphold.
