Bad News for Kenyan Government as Details Emerge Alleging How Ebola Entered the Country
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has sparked debate after a statement circulating on social media linked Kenya’s Ebola case to alleged political efforts to bring Somalis and traditional healers into the country to support President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
In a video shared on Facebook, Kalonzo is heard making the claim in Kiswahili, accusing Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale of allowing people into Kenya to vote for Ruto. However, the full context of the remarks could not be independently established from the clip provided.
The comments come at a time when Kenya is strengthening its public health response following confirmation of its first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease.
The Ministry of Health confirmed the case on October 6, 2026, involving a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to the ministry, the patient fell ill while in the DRC, received treatment at several health facilities and later travelled through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi on October 3. He was admitted to Nairobi Hospital, where he was isolated and tested positive for the virus. He later died.
Health authorities have been tracing people who may have come into contact with the patient to reduce the risk of further transmission.
On October 7, Duale said Kenya had identified 57 contacts linked to the case. Ten had been traced and placed under quarantine as efforts continued to locate the others.
The health ministry has urged Kenyans to remain calm and follow official public health guidance as surveillance and contact tracing continue.
Ebola is a serious infectious disease that spreads through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person, or contaminated materials. Political claims about its arrival should therefore be distinguished from established medical findings.
The available health ministry information links the confirmed case to travel from the DRC through Uganda. It does not support the claim that Somalis or traditional healers brought Ebola into Kenya to influence the election.
The debate comes as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
