What Was Poured Over Wicknell Chivayo and Wife’s Coffins During Burial
Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were laid to rest together on October 8 at Sahwira Glen Forest Memorial Park in a solemn ceremony attended by family members, close friends and fellow church members.
The couple died in a helicopter crash on September 30 while travelling to their rural home to inspect ongoing construction work at their property. Three other people also perished in the tragic accident.
Their graves were prepared on a hilltop, just a few metres from the final resting place of Chivayo’s mother.
However, what drew widespread attention was the unusual procedure carried out after the final prayers. Rather than covering the coffins with soil alone, workers poured a thick layer of concrete over each coffin before completing the burial with earth. The same process was followed for both Chivayo and his wife.
The move prompted speculation among mourners and social media users, with many suggesting that the concrete was intended to prevent grave robbing or the possible disturbance of the couple’s remains. At one point, a woman was also seen sprinkling water on the soil covering Chivayo’s grave.
Footage showing the burial process quickly circulated online, generating mixed reactions. Some users made jokes about the need to protect the expensive coffin, while others defended the decision, arguing that additional security measures can help protect graves from vandalism and illegal interference.
Some commenters also shared claims about possible interference with the remains, although no evidence was presented to substantiate such allegations.
The funeral had already attracted considerable public attention, with hundreds of mourners gathering in Harare to pay their final respects. A procession of black vehicles and security cars, some sounding sirens, moved through the streets as the burial arrangements unfolded. Chivayo was also accorded military honours during the ceremony.
For many Zimbabweans, the burial brought a solemn conclusion to a tragedy that had dominated public discussion for more than a week, leaving the country mourning the loss of the couple and the other victims of the helicopter crash.
