Living with HIV Does Not Always Mean Getting Sick Soon
Many people in South Africa still think that testing positive for HIV means they will fall ill quickly. The good news is that this is no longer the case for most people. With proper care, a person can live with HIV for many years and still feel strong and healthy.
One important reason is the stage known as clinical latency. After the early stage of infection, the virus slows down and multiplies at very low levels. During this time, many people have no symptoms at all. They go about their daily lives feeling normal. Without treatment, this stage can last about ten years or even longer in some people.
The biggest reason people stay healthy is effective HIV treatment. Antiretroviral therapy, commonly called ART, works very well when taken every day as the doctor advises. The medicine lowers the amount of virus in the blood until it becomes undetectable. This means tests can no longer find the virus. When the viral load stays undetectable, the immune system remains strong. People can live long and healthy lives, almost like those who do not have HIV. They also cannot pass the virus to their sexual partners. Health workers call this Undetectable equals Untransmittable, or U=U.
A healthy lifestyle also plays a helpful role. Eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking, and getting enough rest all support the body. These habits help the immune system, improve energy levels, and reduce the chance of other health problems. Good living habits work best when combined with proper HIV medicine.
It is important to remember that looking well does not mean a person is free of HIV. The only way to know for sure is to test. Early testing and starting treatment on time make a big difference. Today, HIV is a manageable condition for people who stay on their treatment and take care of their health.
If you have questions or need support, visit your nearest clinic or speak to a healthcare worker. Treatment is available, and it helps people live full lives.
