Ghana and Zambia are taking steps to foster greater economic partnership and bilateral trade on the continent following President John Dramani Mahama’s recent visit to Zambia.

President Mahama embarked on a three-day working visit to Zambia from February 4 to February 6, 2026, accompanied by the First Lady, Lordina Mahama.

A major highlight of the president’s visit was the renewal of bilateral relations between the two countries through the signing of ten Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).

2. Fintech Agreements – Contracts between Ghanaian and Zambian companies worth over $50 million in the short term, expected to create approximately 8,000 jobs.

3. Natural Resource Agreements – Focused on maximizing value addition and promoting environmentally friendly practices.

4. Defense Cooperation Agreement – Designed to create additional frontiers for the armed forces of both nations.

5. Technical Assistance from Ghana – Support for the establishment of a Minerals Commission and GoldBod in Zambia.

6. Technical Assistance from Zambia – Guidance on solar energy regulation and scientifically improved seedling production in Ghana.

7. New Trade Corridors – Designed to allow both nations to serve as regional hubs for West African and Southern African markets.

8. Product Certification Standardisation – Agreement to standardise certification of products from both countries.

9. Bilateral Air Services Agreement – Enhances aviation cooperation and establishes direct flights between Accra and Lusaka.

10. Ghana will host a Fugu and Kente Trade Exhibition in Zambia in March, following the tremendous interest of Zambians in Ghanaian traditional outfits and President Hakainde Hichilema’s public expression of intent to place orders.
