Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to strengthening security across Ghana’s airports in the face of evolving global aviation threats.

According to her, the aviation security landscape is becoming increasingly complex, with terrorist tactics growing more sophisticated and harder to detect.

“The aviation security landscape is constantly evolving. Threats have become increasingly complex and sophisticated. Terrorist tactics now range from improvised weapons and explosives to the exploitation of advanced technologies,” she said.

Opare explained that criminals are employing more elaborate concealment methods, including camouflaging, disguising, dismantling and manipulating prohibited items in attempts to undermine existing aviation security systems.

She noted that these emerging threats require heightened vigilance, continuous innovation, and a stronger collective commitment from all stakeholders within the aviation ecosystem.

“These realities demand heightened vigilance, continuous innovation, and collective responsibility. We cannot afford complacency,” she stressed.

Opare further outlined GACL’s vision of positioning Ghana as the preferred aviation hub and a leader in airport business within West Africa, noting that achieving this goal depends on teamwork, dedication and the active participation of staff and partners across all airports in the country.

“Our airports are national assets. They must be protected at all times with unwavering commitment against acts of terrorism and unlawful interference,” she added.

She made these remarks at the maiden edition of the Aviation Security Week, held in Accra on February 9, 2026.

The event, themed “Promoting a Strong and Dynamic Security Culture,” seeks to integrate security consciousness into daily aviation operations. It also builds on the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) 2019 Year of Security Culture initiative, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
