The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has launched four new programmes, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey.
The programmes, which include a PhD in Public Policy and Leadership, a Bachelor of Science in Applied Studies, an MPhil in Applied Statistics, and an MSc in Applied Statistics, are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address contemporary challenges.
The launch ceremony, held at the university’s auditorium in Accra on Friday, February 6, brought together members of the academic community, policymakers, professionals, and the general public.
The programmes underscore the university’s commitment to advancing scholarship and practice in public policy and leadership and other areas, with a focus on developing visionary leaders and policy experts.
The launch event highlighted the importance of effective leadership and policymaking in shaping the future of Ghana and beyond.
The new programmes are expected to attract professionals and academics seeking to enhance their expertise in various fields.
Speaking at the launch, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Kweku Mensah Mawutor, said the programmes have been strategically developed to cater to time-constrained workers, as the university has started running campuses in selected institutions.
He announced that in the coming days, there will be a meeting that will culminate in the launch of the PhD in Public Policy and Leadership programme on the premises of Parliament to make it convenient for parliamentarians to pursue.
According to him, lecturers from the university will go to the premises of Parliament to teach the courses.
He explained that the PhD in Public Policy and Leadership was developed specifically for legislators.
“We need policymakers who understand economics, finance, ethics, law, and the social consequences of our decisions. A PhD in public policy and leadership will equip us to produce high-level researchers in governance and public policy, equip leaders with analytical tools to design, implement, and evaluate policies, strengthen institutional leadership across the public sector, government, and civil society, and advance research that addresses governance development priorities and Africa’s broader transformation agenda,” he said.
Prof. Mawutor added that the goal is to nurture top leaders who influence legislation, shape institutions, and contribute to global policy discourse.
The university recently launched a PhD programme on the premises of the Ministry of National Security, and this new programme is expected to have a similar impact.
Member of Parliament for Zabzugu, Alhassan Umar, was one of the parliamentarians who attended the launch.
