NPP MPs Call for Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin’s Suspension Over Alleged Disrespect Toward CJ Boonie
Parliament has been thrown into tension after NPP lawmakers demanded action against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over remarks they claimed were offensive to Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
The disagreement reportedly emerged during a debate when some members of the ruling party accused Afenyo-Markin of making comments that undermined the authority and dignity of the judiciary.
NPP MPs described the alleged remarks as contrary to parliamentary standards and appealed to the Speaker to take appropriate disciplinary action.
They argued that lawmakers have a responsibility to protect the integrity of national institutions and maintain respect for the judiciary.
Afenyo-Markin, the MP for Effutu, had not issued an official response to the allegations.
The dispute adds to existing political tensions in the House and has renewed concerns about parliamentary conduct and the relationship between political debate and respect for judicial institutions.
The Speaker will have to determine whether the matter warrants formal disciplinary action in accordance with parliamentary rules.
