Mahama Petitions For Removal of EC Chair, 3 Others Over Alleged ‘Gross Incompetence’
John Dramani Mahama has taken steps to challenge the leadership of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, calling for the removal of Chairperson Jean Mensa and three other high-ranking officials over allegations of gross incompetence.
The former president’s petition reportedly stems from concerns over a number of administrative decisions and practices at the EC which he believes could undermine confidence in the country’s electoral process.
According to Mahama’s position, problems within the Commission have become particularly worrying during critical periods surrounding elections. He has argued that unless the alleged shortcomings are addressed, they could damage public trust and potentially affect the credibility of future polls.
The handling of voter registration has been identified as one of the key areas of concern, along with other responsibilities of the electoral body. Mahama reportedly sees these issues as evidence of a wider pattern of poor administration within the Commission.
He has also sought to make clear that his petition is not motivated by personal hostility toward the officials involved. Rather, he says his objective is to promote reforms that would help guarantee transparent, credible and democratic elections in Ghana.
The move has divided opinion among Ghanaians. Some have praised Mahama for demanding greater accountability from the electoral body, while others believe the petition could contribute to political tension, particularly as the country approaches another election cycle.
The Electoral Commission has not yet issued a response to the claims contained in the petition.
Meanwhile, legal experts have stressed that the removal of Electoral Commission officials cannot be carried out casually, as constitutional requirements and established legal procedures must be followed.
The controversy has therefore brought renewed attention to questions surrounding electoral accountability, institutional independence and the need to maintain public confidence in Ghana’s democratic system.
