A downpour that hit the entire Bono East Region on Sunday February 1, has caused extensive destruction to properties and personal belongings running into thousands of Ghana cedis.
The worst affected communities, of the rains which accompanied incessant lightning and storm were spread across Atebubu/Amantin municipality, Sene West and Sene East Districts of the region, rendering scores of people homeless.
Mr Kwasi Lampo, the Bono East Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during a visit to some of the affected communities that about 30 households, ripping off roofing of many classroom buildings.
He said the NDAMO was collaborating with the various Municipal and District Assemblies to provide some relief items to the affected households.
Mr Abdalah Abubakari, the Sene West District Director of the NADMO, also told the GNA that bushfires were assuming disturbing proportions in the area, saying about seven bushfires had been recorded destroying acres of maize farms and cashew plantation.
He called for intensified public sensitisation and enactment and enforcement of byelaws to help bring the situation under control.
In an interview with Mr Habib Adamu, the Assembly Member for the Willie Kofi Electoral Area in the District, he appealed to philanthropists, corporate and religious bodies to support the upkeep of the affected people.
He noted that most of the affected people were peasant farmers who could not afford to re-roof their houses now.
Mr Braimah Murtala, the Sene West District Coordinating Director, told the GNA that the assembly was doing everything possible to alleviate the plight of the affected people and appealed for public support.
