Accra, Feb.4, GNA – The second edition of the University of Ghana (UG) Corporate Football League has been launched with over 18 participating institutions set to compete for laurels and bragging rights.
The ceremony brought together senior officials of the university, representatives of the competing corporate bodies, media partners, and organisers for the official balloting and unveiling of the league trophy.
Speaking at the launch, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, described football as a valuable complement to both academic and professional life.
“When colleagues swap boardrooms for jerseys, they learn about collaboration and teamwork—skills they take back to their offices. This year’s league is about scaling impact.
“We have listened to feedback and strengthened partnerships with sponsors and the media,” she said.
Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, in a speech read on his behalf, underscored the importance of physical activity for workers who spend most of their time in office settings.
He noted that the league had, within a year, gone beyond football to promote friendships among organisations and enhance professional relationships.
“You may not win the trophy, but you may gain something more important—a healthy workforce, improved morale, stronger teamwork, better mental well-being, and increased productivity,” he stated.
He commended the Sports and Wellness Directorate of the University of Ghana and Rite Sports for their effective organisation of the inaugural edition and expressed optimism for another successful season.
Dr. Austin Luguterah, Director of the Sports and Wellness Directorate, said the competition remains committed to promoting employee wellness and reducing workplace stress through regular physical activity.
He added that improvements in organization and match-day delivery were based on lessons from last year.
The balloting of teams was supervised by Mr Yaw Sakyi Afari, Chief Executive Officer of Rite Sports Services. Defending champions Ghana Civil Aviation Authority were the seeded team in Group A while last year’s runner up Union Ghana were seeded in Group B, setting the stage for several high-profile encounters.
Other participating teams in this year’s tournament include GOIL, Ghana Football Association, GNPC, Stanbic Bank, Forestry Commission, National Petroleum Authority, Telecel, Wilmar, and a host of others.
