‘You Are Hungry Because You Are Lazy’ – APC Campaign DG Tells Nigerians at Rivers Rally
According to a report by The Daily Post on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Abdulaziz Yari, has sparked controversy after attributing the hunger and economic hardship facing many Nigerians partly to laziness and unwillingness to work.
Yari made the statement on Saturday during the APC presidential campaign rally held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he addressed party supporters and residents gathered to show support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
The former Zamfara State governor argued that the government’s economic policies were not entirely responsible for the hardship experienced by Nigerians, insisting that individual attitudes towards work also contributed to the problem.
In a remark that could generate strong reactions among Nigerians struggling with the rising cost of living, Yari told the audience that people who were hungry needed to examine their willingness to work.
“You are hungry because you are lazy. If you work hard, you will not be hungry,” he declared.
The APC chieftain further alleged that many Nigerians, particularly young people, preferred staying at home and waiting for financial assistance rather than engaging in productive activities.
He used the opportunity to compare the present generation with previous generations, arguing that people in the past were more committed to hard work and self-reliance.
According to him, Nigerians previously engaged in farming and other productive activities, working during the day to provide food for their families.
Yari lamented what he described as the declining interest among young people in agriculture and vocational skills, claiming that many preferred spending time on their mobile phones while blaming the government for their economic difficulties.
He specifically mentioned farming and learning trades as practical ways through which young Nigerians could become financially independent instead of depending entirely on government assistance.
His comments come at a time when many households across the country are facing economic pressure from rising food prices, transportation costs and other living expenses.
