Umejiaku Wins Two Major Awards After Flamingos’ World Cup Triumph

Nigeria’s Oluebube Umejiaku has received two major individual honours following the Flamingos’ historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The 16-year-old forward was named Player of the Match in Saturday’s final against Japan and also won the tournament’s Golden Ball award as its best overall player.

Umejiaku played a decisive role in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory, scoring the second goal just two minutes after half-time to give the Flamingos a two-goal advantage.

Awawu Bashiru had opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Japan reduced the deficit through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute.

Nigeria held on to secure their first-ever U-17 Women’s World Cup title, becoming the first African nation to win the competition.

Umejiaku finished the tournament with four goals and two assists, according to FIFA and reports on the individual award ceremony.

Her journey at the competition was remarkable. She began the tournament on the bench but gradually became one of Nigeria’s most influential players, delivering when her country needed her most.

The Golden Ball recognition places her among the standout young talents in women’s football and adds another historic achievement to Nigeria’s memorable campaign.

For the Flamingos, the victory was a team achievement, but Umejiaku’s individual awards have given the celebrations another special highlight.
