SAD: Teaching Couple Among Four Teachers Killed in Road Accident Travelling to Nairobi For Wedding
A journey intended to bring relatives together for a wedding has instead left several families mourning after a collision on the Eldoret–Nakuru Highway claimed eight lives. Among those killed were educators Solomon Otimo and his wife, Christine, as well as their niece, Harriet Khaosa.
The three were travelling towards Nairobi in a North Rift Shuttle when it collided head-on with a lorry carrying ballast at Kondoo, in the Timboroa area. The impact proved fatal for eight people, turning the planned family journey into a tragedy.
Solomon’s death has prompted sadness among former colleagues and students who remember his long service in the classroom. He taught at Friends Maturu Senior Mixed School and had earlier spent many years at St Paul’s Lugari Boys, where he began working in the 1990s before leaving during the 2020s.
His teaching responsibilities covered Physics, Mathematics, Computer Studies and Christian Religious Education. Former learners recalled his contribution to introducing computer lessons at St Paul’s, giving students an opportunity to study a subject that was gaining importance. They remembered him as friendly and approachable, often smiling and using humour to connect with those around him.
Christine was part of the education community. She worked at St Mukasa Boys Senior School in Chimoi, in the Matete area. Their deaths have therefore been felt across schools and among people who knew the couple through their professional work.
The wider loss has also affected Lugari Constituency, where the accident claimed the lives of two school heads and a learner. The deceased administrators were Jane Watai, who led Chamavele Comprehensive School, and Sarah Ombacho, head of Lumani Comprehensive School.
The deaths of four teachers, including two school leaders, leave a gap for their institutions, colleagues and learners. Their work involved not only classroom instruction but also guiding and supporting young people through their education.
As relatives and communities come to terms with the crash, tributes are centred on the lives lost and the contribution they made to schools. What began as travel for a family celebration has become a period of grief for households and the education community across the area.
