RIP: Kenyans and Leaders Thrown Into Mourning as Prominent Figure Dies Suddenly

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro has led Kenyans in mourning veteran lawyer Morris Mwambui Kupalia following his death on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

The death of the respected advocate has left the legal fraternity and residents of the Coast region mourning a man whose contribution to the legal profession and public service spanned several decades.

In his condolence message, Mung’aro described Kupalia as a legal pioneer who played an important role in opening doors for private legal practice in Kilifi and the wider Coast region.

The governor said Kupalia’s contribution would remain part of the county’s history, extending his condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and members of the legal profession.

Kupalia made history as the first practising advocate in the Malindi and Kilifi regions. He established Kupalia Advocates in 1971, a law firm that served the community for more than five decades.

Apart from his legal career, the late lawyer also served the public in different leadership positions.

He was the Mayor of Malindi for two terms between 1982 and 1992, giving him an opportunity to contribute to the town’s development and administration.

Malindi Member of Parliament Amina Mnyazi also joined other leaders in mourning the veteran lawyer.

In an emotional tribute, Mnyazi revealed that Kupalia was her uncle, describing his death as a painful loss to the family.

She remembered him as a great man, mentor and important figure in the community.

Although the family and leaders have continued to receive messages of sympathy, the cause of his death had not been made public by Sunday, November 8.

His passing marks the loss of a prominent figure whose work touched the legal profession, local leadership and the wider Malindi community.
