Ruto’s Govt Announces Multi-billion Road Project In Homa Bay Months After Sifuna’s Expose
The government has announced plans to upgrade a 17-kilometre road in Suba South, Homa Bay County, in an infrastructure project expected to improve transport, boost trade and open up the region’s tourism potential.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced the development on Sunday, November 8, revealing that the Tonga-Kisaku-Osiri Road would be upgraded to bitumen standards through the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).
The announcement comes months after images showing the poor condition of roads in parts of Suba South triggered online jokes comparing the area to Yemen, a country affected by prolonged conflict.
However, Omollo maintained that the online comparisons should not determine the region’s future, arguing that improved infrastructure could transform the lakeside community.
He said the road project would strengthen connections between local communities and the Sori-Magunga-Sindo highway before linking to the proposed Lake Victoria Ring Road network through the Sindo-Nyandiwa section.
The upgrade is expected to benefit farmers and fishermen by making it easier to transport agricultural produce and fresh fish to trading centres and wider markets.
Omollo added that better roads would also improve access to fish-landing beaches, encourage investment and create opportunities for tourism and waterfront businesses.
The announcement comes amid broader government plans to develop the Lake Victoria region through investments in fishing and water transport infrastructure.
The administration is undertaking the construction of nine modern fish landing sites, alongside new piers and facilities intended to improve the fishing industry.
The proposed facilities will include cold storage rooms, hygienic fish-handling areas and modern trading spaces to minimise post-harvest losses and increase fishermen’s earnings.
Several water transport projects are also underway, including construction works at Muhuru Bay Pier in Migori County and Usenge in Siaya County. Additional developments are planned for Mbita, Kendu Bay and Sena on Mfangano Island.
The government is also nearing completion of a public ferry in Kisumu.
Omollo further disclosed that additional security personnel and patrol boats would be deployed on Lake Victoria before the end of 2026 to improve safety for fishermen and passengers.
