No Escape For Chiefs: Amakhosi Handed A Brutal Semi-Final Test Against Mamelodi Sundowns

Naturena Faces Massive Sundowns Test As Carling Knockout Draw Sets Up Blockbuster Semi-Final

The Carling Knockout Cup semi-final draw has delivered a mouth-watering encounter between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated matches of the competition.

The two South African football giants will battle for a place in the final after being paired against each other in the semi-final draw, while defending champions Orlando Pirates have been handed a challenging assignment against Stellenbosch FC.

The draw has immediately generated excitement among football supporters, particularly because Chiefs and Sundowns are among the country’s most recognised football institutions.

Interestingly, the semi-final draw was not seeded, meaning there were no restrictions preventing the biggest teams from meeting at this stage of the competition.

As a result, supporters will witness a heavyweight showdown before the final, with either Sundowns or Chiefs guaranteed to miss out on the opportunity to lift the trophy.

Both teams will approach the encounter determined to put their recent continental disappointments behind them.

Sundowns have endured a difficult period in African competitions after suffering elimination from the CAF Champions League and subsequently losing 3-1 to USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Miguel Cardoso’s men will therefore view the Carling Knockout as an important opportunity to restore confidence and demonstrate their determination to compete for domestic honours.

The Brazilians booked their semi-final place after defeating Golden Arrows, maintaining their ambitions of adding another domestic trophy to their collection.

Meanwhile, Chiefs also have unfinished business after their disappointing elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup.

However, Fernando Da Cruz’s team has managed to keep its domestic cup ambitions alive.

Amakhosi secured their place in the last four after producing a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Siwelele FC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Siwelele initially took the lead through Siyabonga Ndebele before Wandile Duba equalised from the penalty spot.

Asanele Velebayi subsequently emerged as the match-winner, scoring in the closing stages after coming off the bench.

The victory provided Chiefs with a much-needed boost following their recent Soweto Derby disappointment against Orlando Pirates.

In the other semi-final, Orlando Pirates will take on Stellenbosch FC as they continue their defence of the Carling Knockout trophy.

The Buccaneers booked their place in the semi-finals after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United on Saturday.

Pirates will be determined to maintain their impressive knockout competition record and move closer to winning back-to-back Carling Knockout titles.

However, Stellenbosch will not make things easy for the defending champions.

The Western Cape outfit secured qualification after defeating AmaZulu FC 2-1 in a dramatic quarter-final encounter.

Gavin Hunt’s side, which won the competition in 2023, will be hoping to reproduce that success by eliminating another major contender.
