“You Are in the Wrong Career”: Senator Methu Tells Matiang’i to Drop Presidential Bid
Nyandarua Senator John Methu has criticised former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i over his presidential ambitions, urging him to reconsider his political direction and pursue a different professional path instead.
Speaking during a political engagement, Methu questioned whether Matiang’i had the leadership qualities required to become Kenya’s next president. He suggested that the former Cabinet Secretary would be better suited to a technical position in a government headed by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“Matiang’i, you are in the wrong career. Tafuta kazi nyingine. Hii kazi ya urais hauwezi. Gachagua akiwa Rais atakutafutia kazi ya technocrat,” Methu stated.
His remarks were a direct challenge to Matiang’i’s political aspirations, particularly as the former Interior CS has emerged as one of the personalities associated with opposition efforts to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
By proposing that Gachagua could appoint Matiang’i to a technocratic position, Methu appeared to suggest that his experience in public administration would be more valuable in a professional government role than in the country’s highest political office.
Methu has consistently demonstrated his support for Gachagua and his political movement, frequently defending the former Deputy President’s approach to building an alternative political force. He has also supported efforts focused on strengthening grassroots mobilisation and expanding the opposition’s influence ahead of the next general election.
The latest exchange comes amid growing political discussions within opposition circles over leadership, possible alliances and the selection of a suitable presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in 2027.
Matiang’i, who served as Interior Cabinet Secretary under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, remains one of the prominent figures whose name has featured in conversations surrounding the opposition’s presidential plans.
His experience in government and previous leadership positions have kept him relevant in discussions about the country’s political future.
However, Methu’s latest remarks highlight the disagreements emerging among politicians who are expected to work together in challenging the current administration.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gain momentum, competition for political influence and disagreements over who should lead the opposition ticket are likely to remain major issues.
The latest comments have further exposed the differences within the opposition, particularly regarding the suitability of potential presidential candidates and the direction their political movement should take.
