Papi Zothwane Dismisses Orlando Pirates Hoodoo Talk After Fourth Defeat

Sekhukhune United head coach Papi Zothwane has dismissed suggestions that his team are suffering from an Orlando Pirates hoodoo after losing to the Soweto giants for the fourth time this season.

The latest setback came on Saturday afternoon when Sekhukhune United suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Pirates in their Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final encounter at the Orlando Amstel Arena.

The result ended Sekhukhune’s hopes of progressing to the semi-finals, while the Buccaneers continued their defence of the competition with another important victory.

Mpho Padime proved to be the difference between the two sides, scoring the decisive goal to send the defending champions into the last four.

The defeat further highlighted Sekhukhune’s difficulties against Pirates this campaign, having previously lost three encounters against the same opponents across different competitions.

Despite the repeated setbacks, Zothwane is not convinced that his players have developed a psychological problem whenever they face the Buccaneers.

The Sekhukhune coach has instead played down suggestions of a hoodoo, maintaining that every match should be approached as a separate challenge rather than allowing previous results to influence the team’s mentality.

The latest meeting also presented another opportunity for Zothwane to test his tactical approach against one of the strongest sides in South African football. However, his players were unable to produce the result needed to change their recent record.

For Pirates, the victory represents another successful step in their pursuit of the Carling Knockout trophy, with the club now preparing for the semi-final stage.

Sekhukhune, meanwhile, must turn their attention back to their other competitions and find ways to improve their performances against difficult opponents.

With another meeting between the sides possible in future fixtures, Zothwane will be hoping his team can eventually overcome their frustrating run against the Buccaneers.
