Dali Mpofu Says South Africa Must Remove Ramaphosa’s ANC Government from Power
Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party member and senior counsel Dali Mpofu has stated that his party’s main political goal is to remove what he described as the “ANC of Ramaphosa” from government. His remarks were made during South Africa’s 2026 local government election period, as political parties campaigned and voters headed to the polls.
Mpofu’s comments suggest that the MK Party wants to challenge the political leadership associated with President Cyril Ramaphosa. By using the phrase “ANC of Ramaphosa”, he appeared to distinguish the current leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) from the party’s wider history and identity.
The statement comes at a time when the ANC is facing growing political competition and public criticism over issues including unemployment, corruption and poor service delivery. South Africans have also raised concerns about water shortages, electricity challenges and other problems affecting their communities. These issues have become important topics in the debate over the country’s political future.
The MK Party, led by former president Jacob Zuma, has positioned itself as a political alternative to the ANC under Ramaphosa. Mpofu’s remarks reflect the party’s stated intention to challenge the governing party’s position and influence in national politics. However, removing a government through democratic elections requires winning sufficient public support and following the country’s constitutional and electoral processes.
His comments have added to the political debate surrounding the 2026 local government elections and the future direction of South Africa. With parties preparing for coalition discussions in municipalities where no single party secures enough support to govern alone, the relationship between the ANC and opposition parties is expected to remain an important issue.
