How M-PESA Jumbe Lets Kenyans Confirm Payments Without Revealing Private Details

According to a report by K24 Digital on Friday, November 6, 2026, Safaricom has introduced M-PESA Jumbe, a feature designed to make payment confirmation easier while protecting customers’ personal financial information.

For many Kenyans, paying for goods and services through M-PESA often comes with a familiar request from shop attendants: “Nionyeshe message yako” (show me your message). Whether shopping at a supermarket, buying fuel, eating at a restaurant or purchasing goods from a local shop, customers are frequently asked to display their transaction confirmation messages before leaving.

However, this practice could expose personal information that customers may not want other people to see, including their full names, phone numbers and remaining M-PESA balances.

The introduction of M-PESA Jumbe provides an alternative by allowing customers to confirm payments without necessarily revealing their usual transaction messages.

M-PESA Jumbe, also known as Split Notifications, is a service that allows businesses using Lipa na M-PESA Till, PayBill and Pochi la Biashara to nominate employees who can receive payment notifications directly on their mobile phones.

Previously, shop attendants sometimes had to contact business owners whenever customers made payments because the transaction notifications were sent to the owner’s registered phone number.

This could cause unnecessary delays, particularly in busy businesses where employees needed confirmation before releasing goods or allowing customers to leave.

With M-PESA Jumbe, business owners can authorise employees to receive payment alerts, making it easier for them to independently confirm transactions.

The service also sends customers a separate Jumbe confirmation message that can be used as proof of payment.

Unlike the ordinary M-PESA transaction SMS, this separate notification does not expose the customer’s full name, complete phone number or M-PESA account balance.

What Information Appears in the Jumbe Message?

One of the important features of M-PESA Jumbe is the use of a JumbeID.

Instead of displaying the customer’s full name and phone number, the notification uses an identifier created from the first letters of the customer’s first and last names, together with the final two digits of their phone number.

For example, a customer named Nancy Kamau whose phone number ends in 74 could appear as NK_74.

The message also contains important payment information, including the transaction reference, amount paid, business name, Till or payment number, date and time of the transaction.

This allows the business to establish whether a payment has been received without unnecessarily exposing the customer’s personal information.

The transaction reference is particularly important because different customers can sometimes have similar JumbeIDs.

How Kenyans Can Use M-PESA Jumbe to Confirm Payments

Customers do not need to register for M-PESA Jumbe or activate the service themselves.

When a customer makes a payment to a participating business that has activated the feature, Safaricom sends a separate Jumbe confirmation SMS alongside the ordinary M-PESA transaction message.

Customers can open the Jumbe notification and show it to the shop attendant whenever proof of payment is required.

This provides a more private way of confirming transactions without displaying their full personal details or account balances.

However, customers should understand that the service depends on the business having activated M-PESA Jumbe.

If a business has not enabled the feature, customers may continue receiving the usual M-PESA confirmation message without the additional Jumbe notification.

How Business Owners Can Activate M-PESA Jumbe

Safaricom has also provided businesses with a way to activate the service and nominate employees who should receive payment notifications.

Business owners or authorised administrators can dial *234# using their Safaricom lines and follow the M-PESA Jumbe menu prompts.

They can then nominate employees by entering their Safaricom mobile numbers.

Safaricom allows businesses to nominate up to 50 additional users to receive payment notifications.

However, nominated employees must first accept the invitation sent to their phones before they can start receiving the notifications.

Business administrators can also remove employees who no longer need access to the payment alerts.

The employees receive limited transaction information required to verify payments. They do not gain access to the business owner’s M-PESA balance, PIN, statements or transaction history.

The service is also accessible through the M-PESA Business Hub.

Why M-PESA Jumbe Matters to Kenyan Customers

The introduction of M-PESA Jumbe addresses a common challenge experienced by customers and businesses across the country.

For customers, the service offers an additional layer of privacy when making everyday payments.

For business owners, it reduces the inconvenience of having to personally confirm every transaction whenever employees receive payments from customers.

It can also help supermarkets, restaurants, petrol stations, salons and other businesses serve customers more efficiently by allowing authorised employees to receive payment notifications directly.

Importantly, M-PESA Jumbe does not change how customers make payments. Instead, it changes how payment notifications are shared and how businesses can verify transactions.

As more businesses adopt the feature, Kenyans could find it easier to confirm their payments without unnecessarily exposing private financial information.

For customers who regularly hear the words “Nionyeshe message yako” after making an M-PESA payment, this new feature offers a potentially more convenient and privacy-conscious alternative.
