Gor Mahia Lead Harambee Stars Call-Ups As Benni McCarthy Names Final Squad

Gor Mahia have emerged as the best-represented local club in Harambee Stars’ final squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against South Africa.

Four players from the Kenyan champions have secured places in head coach Benni McCarthy’s 24-man selection, underlining the club’s strong presence in the national team setup.

Goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, defenders Sylvester Owino and Frank Odhiambo, alongside forward Ben Stanley, are the Gor Mahia players who have made the final list.

However, the selection has also brought disappointment for another member of the K’Ogalo squad.

Midfielder Alpha Onyango, who was part of McCarthy’s provisional team, has been left out after the coach reduced his selection.

Michael Kibwage is another Gor Mahia player who failed to survive the final squad selection, joining Onyango among the local-based players dropped.

Gor Mahia’s four representatives form the largest contingent from any domestic club.

Tusker and Nairobi United follow with two players apiece.

Elsewhere, the final squad includes the return of midfielder Alwyn Tera, who plays for Armenian club Ararat-Armenia, and Poland-based defender Eric Marcelo Ouma of RKS Raków.

Kenya will face South Africa twice, with the first encounter scheduled for November 13 at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg before the return fixture at Nyayo Stadium on November 17.

McCarthy’s side are under pressure to collect points after beginning their Group D campaign with a 1-1 draw against Eritrea and a 1-0 defeat to Guinea.

The double-header provides the national team with an opportunity to revive its qualification hopes, while Gor Mahia’s four selected players will be looking to make their contributions on the international stage.
