Video Shows How Tanzanian Police Took Over Mwanza Streets Ahead of Charlene Ruto’s Wedding

A video showing Tanzanian police officers being deployed across Mwanza has drawn attention following the wedding of President William Ruto’s daughter, Charlene Ruto, and businessman Isaya Yunge.

The footage, shared by a local Tanzanian content creator, showed officers arriving in pickup trucks before getting out in large groups. They were then seen taking positions at different locations around the lakeside city ahead of the ceremony.

The deployment was part of security arrangements announced by the Mwanza Regional Police Command before the wedding, held on Friday, November 6, at Malaika Beach Resort.

Mwanza Regional Police Commander Wilbrod Mutafungwa said the command had strengthened security ahead of and during the celebrations. He explained that the event was expected to attract senior leaders, government officials and guests from Kenya, Tanzania and beyond.

According to the police, patrols were increased across the city, including on major roads and at hotels expected to host visitors. Officers also conducted patrols on Lake Victoria to help protect people and property.

The police command warned residents and motorists to expect heavier traffic as guests travelled to the venue. Roads identified as likely to experience increased traffic included Makongoro Road, the route linking Mwanza International Airport to the city centre, roads leading to Malaika Beach Resort and Nyerere Road towards Kisesa.

Mutafungwa urged road users to follow traffic rules and obey officers’ instructions to reduce congestion and ensure safe movement around the city.

The wedding brought together members of the two families and prominent guests, including President Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto. The ceremony followed the couple’s traditional Kalenjin Koito held in Kilgoris, Narok County, on August 8.

The footage offers a look at security preparations made before the high-profile celebration began. It also highlights the arrangements by Tanzanian authorities as Mwanza received visitors for the event there.
