Ruto shows off Raila Odinga International Stadium as Kenyans await its first major football fixture
President William Ruto has given Kenyans a glimpse of the new 60,000-seater Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City. The Head of State recently toured the Nairobi facility to assess the progress as the country counts down to the grand opening.
In the shared images on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the president is seen posing on the green pitch, testing the red seats, and highlighting the stadium’s exterior, which features fountains and a large Kenyan shield motif.
The facility is currently under construction on Ngong Road, and Kenyans are waiting to see the final product.
The stadium will officially open on January 5, 2027. The venue is set to host a friendly match between German football club FC Bayern Munich and Dutch side AFC Ajax.
This game will serve as the grand opening of the arena, bringing top-tier European football directly to Nairobi.
Beyond the pitch, the stadium features a design inspired by the Kenyan flag and will include solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems. The facility also includes accessible seating areas, designated entrances, and mobility assistance for persons with disabilities.
The choice of teams carries specific meaning for the project. During a televised address on October 28, 2026, Ruto noted the connection between the Dutch club and the stadium’s original working name.
“Talanta means talent. Ajax Academy is called the future. On January 5, 2027, talent and the future will meet in Nairobi,” he said.
The event is also a nod to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who has historical ties to Germany. The match brings together two of Europe’s most decorated clubs.
Fans who want to watch the match can already buy their tickets online. Sales opened on November 5, 2026, through the official Talanta Sports City website.
Prices for the regular sections start at Ksh2,500. Organisers are also offering premium hospitality packages, with skyboxes available for booking through the official portal.
The government clarified that public money will not fund the event. The match will rely entirely on a commercial model backed by corporate sponsors.
The new stadium is a major part of Kenya’s sports infrastructure. Built by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, the project broke ground in March 2024.
Hosting Bayern Munich and Ajax will test the country’s readiness for large-scale events.
The venue will later serve as a primary host location for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which Kenya will co-host alongside neighbouring Uganda and Tanzania.
