Alfred Mutua Draws Attention After Sharing Helicopter Journey to Charlene’s Wedding

Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua made a memorable journey to Mwanza, Tanzania, to attend Charlene Ruto’s wedding, with the politician taking the controls of a light aircraft for the trip.

Mutua flew a Sling TSi aircraft to the lakeside city ahead of the November 6 ceremony, where Charlene, daughter of President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto, married Tanzanian businessman Isaya Yunge.

Engineer John Macharia shared a photograph showing Mutua posing beside the South African-made aircraft on an airfield. The image offered a glimpse of the CS’s aviation interest, which he has developed over the past few years.

Unlike many guests who travelled to Tanzania by road or commercial flights, Mutua used his piloting skills to make the journey. His decision to fly himself to the wedding also highlighted how far he has come since taking up flying lessons.

The Cabinet Secretary’s interest in aviation dates back many years. Mutua grew up in Riruta Satellite, Nairobi, and has previously spoken about his long-standing ambition to become a pilot.

However, financial pressures and the demands of building his career meant he had to put the dream on hold for a considerable period. He eventually returned to the ambition in 2023 when he enrolled at 99s Flying School.

Mutua completed his training in Kenya and South Africa before earning his Private Pilot Licence. Since then, he has reportedly logged more than 300 flying hours, gaining experience as he continued pursuing his passion.

The CS has previously described his aviation journey as a source of inspiration, encouraging young people to remain committed to their ambitions despite challenges.

His trip to Mwanza offered a practical example of that journey, as he put his flying experience to use for a major family celebration involving some of the country’s most prominent figures.

Charlene’s wedding attracted political leaders, government officials, relatives and friends from Kenya and Tanzania. Mutua was among the Kenyan leaders who travelled to attend the ceremony.
