Afenyo-Markin Pays Emotional Tribute To Javits Frimpong In Parliament
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has used the floor of Parliament to honour the memory of 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong, whose fatal shooting in the United States has sparked grief and calls for accountability in Ghana.
Speaking during Parliament’s sitting on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Effutu MP expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death and urged the government to ensure that the case receives sustained attention until those responsible are brought before the courts.
Javits was fatally shot in the Bronx, New York, on Thursday, October 29, while reportedly walking to school. The teenager’s death has left his family and loved ones mourning, with the incident also attracting concern from Ghanaian officials and members of the public.
In his address, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the initial response by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana’s Permanent Mission in New York, which had engaged with the bereaved family.
However, he argued that expressions of sympathy alone would not be enough. He insisted that the government must remain actively involved in the pursuit of justice and maintain cooperation with American authorities throughout the investigation.
“But condolences are not a policy. Justice is and must be,” he told Parliament.
The Minority Leader warned against allowing the case to lose public attention as time passes. He called for sustained engagement with the relevant United States authorities until those responsible are made to face justice.
He also proposed that the government assign a dedicated officer to work with the New York Police Department and prosecutors in the Bronx. According to him, such an arrangement would help Ghana monitor developments and maintain direct communication with investigators.
Beyond the investigation, Afenyo-Markin called for practical assistance to the family, including legal and consular support. He further urged the government to help bring Javits’ remains to Ghana for burial if that is what the family wishes.
He also requested regular updates to Parliament so that the case would remain a national concern.
The tribute comes as Ghana’s government has already pledged to work with United States authorities to pursue justice for the teenager.
The circumstances of Javits’ killing remain under investigation, and the identity of those responsible has not been officially established. Afenyo-Markin’s message was that Ghana’s commitment to the family should continue until the case reaches the appropriate legal conclusion.
